A covered car park, also known as an enclosed or underground car park (as in most cases), is a dedicated space for car drivers and motorbike riders. Covered car parks may be either public or private, but the primary purpose of all types is the parking of vehicles.
Covered car parks are often of multi-storey construction or located underground. They are generally found under major public or private buildings such as train stations and airports. In France, all buildings in certain urban areas must possess an underground car park that meets a strict set of safety standards, as set out in an official decree (ventilation, fire safety, emergency exits, etc.).
Covered car parks feature a series of pillars, spaced at regular intervals, to support the structure of the building. In order to move between floors, drivers or motorcyclists must go up or down a ramp. Covered car parks feature staircases for pedestrian use, allowing motorists to access the surface safely once they have parked their vehicle.
